Suicide Prevention
Project COURAGE
UC Irvine was awarded a federal grant to focus on suicide prevention in 2006. Our project is called Project COURAGE. Courage is defined as “the state or quality of mind or spirit that enables one to face danger, fear, or vicissitudes with self-possession, confidence, and resolution.” Seeking support or admitting vulnerabilities in a competitive environment often demands courage.?? The overall goal of Project COURAGE is to prevent suicide by promoting a campus norm that honors achievement and competition while encouraging and allowing students to seek support when it is needed. Many faculty, staff, and students have completed a training and are prepared to help refer people to the appropriate services.
Don't Erase Your Future Campaign
Don't Erase Your Future is a campaign to remind people of their valuable potential and to encourage people to use helping services when they are in distress. The campaign features people of historical significance and asks the question, "What if they had committed suicide instead of overcoming life's challenges and contributing to our society?" The campaign is kicked off every fall by a chalk art display by UC Irvine student artists. The award-winning campaign is available at don'teraseyourfuture.org
